Reading Erotica In Public Will Make You A Better Person
I've often said that Kindles and other ereaders are the best thing to have happened to erotica, because now you can read your smut in public without feeling guilty. Like I want anyone to know I was reading 50SOG (but not because of the "erotica". Because they aren't good).
FLAUNT IT
One of the tenants of this blog, however, is the idea that there is nothing to be ashamed about for reading sexy books. Does reading a romance novel take away my college degree or all the other reading I have ever done, or change who I am as a person?
For that matter, does reading the latest NYT best seller confer greater education upon me or make my skin nicer or my paycheck fatter?
No to both.
Good books are good books. Well written words can be about anything in the world. They aren't the purview of thick family memoirs or coming of age novels.
So why shouldn't I proudly flaunt the paperback I've got stashed in my purse?
AIN'T NOTHIN' WRONG WITH THAT
Why are we so ashamed of admitting that yes, we have sex, and yes, we like sex? So yes, we're going to read about sex because it's sexy.
Is it because we think people will assume something about us personally by our choice of reading material? Perhaps. Choosing a book about BDSM speaks to ones personal preferences far more than does, say, a historical fiction about the Civil War.
But again, I'm kind of over that. Do I know these strangers on the train? I do not. Do I therefore give any fucks about their judgement of my perceived sexual fantasies? No sir, I say again, I do not.
And that's something that's taken me a while to get to, but here I am. Reading what I want to read without a thought to spare for the haters.
So if I'm reading on my Kindle these days, it's because it's much easier than carrying 300 books in my purse at once.
All of them dirty as hell.
