The 5 (and a half) Best Places to Get Free Erotica

I like my smut-shopping the way I like my smut -- cheap and easy.

In my quest for free, or nearly free, smutastic fiction, I've acquired an arsenal of sources to keep me in free porn for the rest of my life.

Behold, the list.

1. The Library

I sometimes catch myself forgetting that the library exists. And that it's full of books that you can just take. A practice that's frowned on at Barnes & Noble. You can find everything from tawdry bodice rippers of yore to new releases of S&M-themed trilogies, like the Crossfire series by Sylvia Day. Lots of libraries have electronics books on loan as well, for your favorite ereader. And if your branch is anything like mine, they have a handy self-check terminal so that you can maintain the utmost discretion in your selections, should there be any children present for story time, etc. (Librarians don't judge, though; they're our people.)

1a. Library book sales

Take home those copies permanently for a buck or two each AND help your local library keep doing all the great things it does. Wins for everyone!

2. BookBub

I love BookBub. I get a free daily email with a list of ebooks that are currently being listed for either free or very cheap -- in the $0.99-$2.99 range. They have a range of genres you can choose to follow, including paranormal romance, erotica, and LGBT erotica, as well as all the non-sexy types of reading materials like self-help, biography, and thriller. The emails include links to purchase or download the books on multiple formats, including Kindle, ibooks, and Nook. It's a great way to find new favorites and to check out books by well-known authors for a fraction of the regular price.

3. Thrift stores

If you're looking for a stockpile of 180-page romances, look no farther than your local Goodwill or other thrift shop. These stores are almost always chock full of used paperbacks that are on sale for a song. Often you can find some great vintage covers this way, and we all love a laugh, amirite?

4. Yard sales

Similar to thrift stores, yard and garages sales are awesome places to walk away with a handful of new books for fifty cents a piece or less. Unlike a shop, however, people at yard sales are often just looking to offload the extra junk in their homes so they're willing to negotiate on price -- $2 for this bagful of smut-candy? Done.

5. The Internets

Free erotic short stories abound on the web, from the tame to the nasty, and almost all of it is totally free. My own collection of shorts is all available for free at ScarletGirl.com.

The aptly named ShortEroticStories.com is also a library of free works.

And if you're feeling your Nerd-Oats, dig on FanFiction.net, where a solid percentage of the stories posted feature monkey business in some way, shape, or form, and between characters you already know and love, no less!
